Amsterdam to Eindhoven is about 125 kilometres south on the A2, roughly 1.5 hours by car in normal traffic. The direct Intercity takes about 1 hour 20 minutes between Amsterdam Centraal and Eindhoven Centraal, so for one person heading to Eindhoven’s centre the train is hard to beat; for campuses, early flights and groups, the car usually wins.

Eindhoven is a city people visit for work more than for sightseeing. It anchors Brainport, the technology region built around ASML in Veldhoven, the High Tech Campus and the suppliers that serve them, and every October it hosts Dutch Design Week. Most of those addresses are a drive from the station. This guide explains when each way of getting there makes sense, how the route and its rush hours behave, and how a chauffeured day in Brainport works.

Where in Eindhoven Are You Going?

Eindhoven’s business geography is not a city-centre geography, and that decides most of this comparison. The High Tech Campus sits on the southern edge of the city. ASML is next door in Veldhoven, about 15 minutes from the centre. Strijp-S, the former Philips factory district, is now the creative quarter, and Eindhoven Airport lies on the north-west edge, about 15 minutes from the centre.

Rail serves the station district; it does not serve the campuses well. A visit that starts at the High Tech Campus, moves to Veldhoven after lunch and ends with a supplier across town is a driving day, whatever the timetable says. Corporate campuses also run their own entrances, visitor parking and security procedures, so knowing the right gate saves time exactly when you have none to spare. Our Eindhoven chauffeur guide and the Eindhoven city page cover the city in more detail.

Train, Taxi, Self-Drive or Chauffeur

Each option fits a particular kind of visit. The useful question is how many stops the day has and how much you are carrying.

The train

The NS Intercity from Amsterdam Centraal to Eindhoven Centraal is direct, frequent and inexpensive. For a single meeting in the station district, take it. Beyond the station the trip turns into a bus or taxi ride per appointment, and the return depends on finding one at the end of the day.

Taxi and self-drive

A taxi works for a one-way trip at short notice, but a 125-kilometre journey on the meter has no known price until it ends, and keeping a taxi waiting through a meeting is rarely practical. Driving yourself is straightforward on the A2; the costs show up in the peak-hour traffic out of Amsterdam, in visitor parking at a campus that may have none to spare, and in an evening drive home after a long day.

Private chauffeur

A chauffeur turns the day into one booking. The car collects you at home, at a hotel or at Schiphol, waits near the gate during meetings, moves you between sites and brings you back to Amsterdam in the evening. Two or three colleagues travelling together share one car, and the drive becomes preparation time on the way down and debrief time on the way back.

The Route South

The drive is one motorway for nearly the whole distance. From the city the car joins the A10 ring and takes the A2 south past Utrecht and ‘s-Hertogenbosch to Eindhoven; from Schiphol the start is different but the time is about the same. There are no tolls and no border, and most Dutch motorways are limited to 100 km/h between 06:00 and 19:00, which makes the daytime drive steady rather than quick.

There are no airports between the two cities: Schiphol sits at one end of the trip and Eindhoven Airport, close to the A2 on the north-west side of Eindhoven, at the other.

Schiphol to Eindhoven after a long-haul flight

Visitors to Brainport from outside Europe usually land at Schiphol, and for them the road is often the quickest way south once the train’s change and the last mile to a campus are counted. The chauffeur follows the flight, so an early or late landing moves the pickup automatically, and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board; 60 minutes of waiting after touchdown is included for passport control and baggage. From the kerb it is about an hour and a half to Eindhoven or Veldhoven, long enough to clear the inbox or sleep off the flight before the first meeting.

Rush Hour: Leaving Amsterdam, Reaching Brainport

The morning peak in Amsterdam runs from about 07:00 to 09:30, centred on the A10 ring, and the A2 around Utrecht fills at the same time. For a 09:00 meeting in Veldhoven, a departure from Amsterdam at around 06:30 to 07:00 is the realistic plan, because the peak around Amsterdam and Utrecht is the variable, not the distance.

The return has its own rhythm. The core evening peak runs from about 16:00 to 19:00, and Friday afternoons start early as weekend traffic joins the commute from around 15:00. A meeting that ends at 17:00 often makes for a slower drive north than one that ends at 15:00 or runs into dinner. Our guides to rush hour in the Netherlands and Amsterdam rush hour give the full picture.

Early Flights from Eindhoven Airport

Eindhoven Airport serves a network of European routes, and some Amsterdam-based travellers choose it for a particular flight. It is a compact airport, with short distances from kerb to gate, but it has no railway station: by public transport you reach it by bus from Eindhoven Centraal.

For an early departure, the car is usually the simplest plan. Work back from the check-in time your airline gives you, add the 1.5-hour drive and a margin, and the chauffeur collects you at whatever hour that produces. SilverDrive operates 24/7 with no night surcharge. Our Eindhoven Airport guide explains the terminal, and the Eindhoven Airport transfer page covers pickups for the return.

Dutch Design Week and Other Busy Weeks

Once a year the city tips from technology to design. Dutch Design Week, held each October, spreads exhibitions across dozens of venues, Strijp-S most densely, and brings the largest crowds Eindhoven sees all year. Hotels sell out into the surrounding region, so many visitors stay 20 to 40 minutes away, and a base in Amsterdam becomes a realistic option.

A multi-day booking suits the week: the same chauffeur every day, moving you between venues, dinners and your hotel without a nightly taxi hunt. Demand peaks that week, so book ahead; the price is fixed at booking regardless. Buyers who acquire a piece during the week can have it moved separately through our high-value goods transport service, one courier and one vehicle from door to door.

A Typical SilverDrive Booking

For a business visit, the most useful booking is a day trip: collection in Amsterdam in the morning, the drive south, the car waiting during meetings, and the return in the evening, all at one fixed price agreed in advance. One-way transfers, to a hotel or to Eindhoven Airport, work on the same terms. Chauffeurs are screened and English-speaking, and every car belongs to our own fleet.

The vehicle follows the visit:

  • One to three passengers: the Mercedes-Benz E-Class for an understated business trip, or the S-Class when the drive is working time. The electric EQS and BMW i7 suit companies that track their travel emissions, which in this region is many of them.
  • Engineering teams and design-week groups: the seven-seat V-Class or the electric EQV.
  • Delegations on a site visit: the 16-seat Sprinter VIP.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Amsterdam to Eindhoven?

By car, about an hour and a half for the roughly 125 kilometres, longer if you leave Amsterdam in the morning peak. By train, the direct Intercity takes about 1 hour 20 minutes between the two central stations, before any onward journey to a campus. From Schiphol the drive takes about the same time as from the city.

Is the train or a car better for a day trip to Eindhoven?

For a single meeting near Eindhoven Centraal, the train. For a day that touches the High Tech Campus, Veldhoven or a supplier on the edge of town, a car with a chauffeur who waits between appointments is simpler and usually quicker overall, and it brings you home without a taxi search at the end of the day.

Can the chauffeur wait while I am at ASML or the High Tech Campus?

Yes. Booked by the hour or the day, the car waits near the gate, absorbs meetings that overrun and moves you to the next address when you are ready. Corporate campuses manage their own entrances and visitor procedures, so the chauffeur agrees the exact gate and pickup point with you in advance.

How early should I leave Amsterdam for a flight from Eindhoven Airport?

Start from the check-in time your airline recommends, add about 1.5 hours of driving and a margin for traffic around Amsterdam and Utrecht. For early departures, the car can leave at whatever hour that sum produces, because SilverDrive operates 24/7 and does not add a night surcharge. The compact terminal keeps the last part quick.

Should I fly into Schiphol or Eindhoven to visit Brainport?

It depends on where you are flying from. Eindhoven Airport serves a network of European routes and puts you minutes from the campuses. Intercontinental travellers usually land at Schiphol and drive down, about an hour and a half on the A2, with the flight tracked so the car is waiting whenever the aircraft arrives.

Do you provide transport during Dutch Design Week?

Yes, and it is the week to book early. Dutch Design Week takes place each October across dozens of venues, with Strijp-S the busiest, and hotels fill well beyond the city. A multi-day booking keeps the same chauffeur with you all week, between venues, dinners and an out-of-town hotel, at a price fixed in advance.

What does a chauffeur from Amsterdam to Eindhoven cost?

It depends on the vehicle, whether it is a one-way transfer or a day with waiting time, and the exact addresses. SilverDrive quotes one fixed price at booking, with no meter and no surcharge for traffic, so a slow A2 or a meeting that overruns within the booked time costs nothing extra.
