A same day courier Amsterdam businesses can rely on for urgent items is, at its simplest, one driver and one car doing one job: collect your item, keep it in sight, deliver it to a named person the same day. No depot, no sorting, no second van. SilverDrive runs this as a chauffeur service with a fixed price agreed at booking.

That is not the only kind of same day delivery in Amsterdam, and for a lot of shipments it is not the right kind. This guide explains the difference between network couriers and a dedicated car, when each makes sense, how long the main runs from Amsterdam take, and what to tell us so the job goes right the first time.

What a dedicated same day courier actually is

A dedicated courier carries only your item, on a direct route, from collection to delivery. Nothing else is in the car, nobody else handles it, and the driver does not stop for other customers on the way. In Dutch the trade calls this a direct koerier or spoedkoerier, and in English you will see “urgent courier” or “direct courier” used for the same idea.

Most same day services in the Netherlands work differently. A bike courier or a city van service runs a route with several pickups and drops. Larger networks, including the business courier products from PostNL and DHL, offer same day options that collect before a cut-off and deliver later in the day through their own systems. Those services are efficient, well run and cheaper than a dedicated car. They are built for volume.

The dedicated model trades that efficiency for three things:

  • Time. The car leaves when your item is in it, not when the route is full.
  • Custody. One named driver holds the item from your hand to the recipient’s hand.
  • Flexibility. The driver can wait, redirect, or meet a recipient somewhere other than the delivery address.

How SilverDrive does it

SilverDrive is a chauffeur company, not a parcel company, and the courier work follows the same rules as our passenger work. One vetted driver, an unmarked car from our own fleet, a signature at collection and at delivery, and a fixed price agreed before we move. There is no consolidation: your envelope or box is the only consignment in the car. For a longer explanation of why that structure matters for valuables, see our guide to the high value courier service.

When a regular courier is the better choice

If the item is replaceable and a few hours do not matter, use a regular courier or PostNL. It will cost less, and the network is more than good enough for the job. We would rather tell you that than sell you a car you do not need.

A dedicated car is worth it when one of these is true:

  • A deadline is fixed. A signing, a filing, a flight, a board meeting, a production line waiting for a part.
  • The item cannot be replaced. Originals, signed instruments, passports, prototypes.
  • Confidentiality matters more than value. Deal documents, unreleased samples, anything that should not sit in a sorting hall.
  • The recipient is a person, not a building. Someone at a hotel, at a venue, at an airport, who needs it handed to them.

If none of those applies, save your money.

Typical same day courier jobs from Amsterdam

Most urgent runs we see fall into a handful of patterns. The common thread is a single item with a hard deadline and a named recipient.

Original signatures still matter for some deeds, notarial instruments and closing sets. A typical run is a signed set leaving a Zuidas office for a notary in The Hague or Rotterdam, or originals going to a counterparty in Brussels before a deadline. The driver collects against signature, keeps the envelope sealed, and hands it to the named recipient, who signs in turn. If the set needs to come back countersigned, the driver waits.

Passports, visas and identity documents

A passport returned from a consulate, a visa that has to reach a traveller before a flight, a forgotten passport that needs to get to Schiphol. These are low in replacement value and very high in consequence. Handing them to a stranger at a depot counter is exactly what you want to avoid.

Spare parts and production items

When a machine is down, the part that fixes it is worth far more than its price. A dedicated car can collect from a supplier and drive straight to the site, including at night, so the line restarts when the shift begins. Larger parts need more room than a saloon boot; tell us dimensions and weight when booking so we can send a Mercedes-Benz V-Class, or tell you plainly that a freight van is the better tool for a heavy load.

Forgotten items and personal deliveries

Laptops left in hotel rooms, keys, a speech left on a kitchen table, a wedding ring that stayed at home. Small, personal, urgent. The driver can deliver to the person at a venue or meet them at a terminal entrance.

Luxury retail and private clients

Boutiques in the P.C. Hooftstraat area send pieces to clients at hotels, to a private viewing, or to a sister store. Watches and jewellery go to and from service workshops. This is where the single custody chain and an unmarked car matter most, and where insurance should be agreed in writing first. Our high value goods transport service covers that side in detail.

A note on medical material

We do not carry regulated diagnostic specimens, dangerous goods or medicines that need a validated cold chain. Those require certified packaging, trained handlers and documentation that a specialist medical courier provides. If you are unsure whether your item falls into that category, ask before booking and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right service.

Drive times from Amsterdam for same day courier runs

Most Randstad deliveries take under an hour and a half door to door outside the peaks; Antwerp and Brussels are comfortably same day. The table gives approximate driving times from central Amsterdam in normal traffic, without stops.

DestinationApprox. distanceApprox. drive time
Utrecht45 km40 to 50 minutes
The Hague60 km50 to 60 minutes
Rotterdam75 km1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes
Eindhoven120 km1 hour 20 to 1 hour 40 minutes
Antwerp160 km1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes
Brussels205 km2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes

These are road times, not promises. The A10, A4 and A2 slow down sharply in the morning and evening peaks, and an accident around Rotterdam or Antwerp can add an hour. Our Amsterdam rush hour guide explains when the worst windows fall. For a time-critical delivery we plan backwards from the deadline with a buffer, and we tell you when the buffer is thin.

If the destination is further away (Paris, Frankfurt, London), the logic changes and so does the planning. That is covered in our guide to a same day courier in Europe.

How to book an urgent courier in Amsterdam

Give us the collection point, the recipient, the deadline and a description of the item, and we will confirm a car, a driver and a fixed price. The more precise the brief, the faster we can commit.

What to tell us

  1. Collection address and contact. Who will hand the item over, and how to reach them. Mention reception desks, security gates or loading bays.
  2. Delivery address and recipient. A named person, a phone number, and how they will identify themselves. If they might be elsewhere, say so.
  3. The deadline. Not “as soon as possible” but the actual latest acceptable time, and why. A 14:00 signing is planned differently from a 14:00 flight.
  4. What the item is. Size, weight, whether it is fragile, whether it needs to stay flat or upright. You do not need to disclose contents you would rather keep private, but tell us anything that affects handling.
  5. Value and insurance. For anything valuable, the declared value and which policy covers it, so we can agree the arrangement in writing before collection.
  6. Return leg. Whether the driver should wait for a countersignature or bring something back.

Book online through the booking page or contact us directly when the timing is tight. Because the price is fixed at booking, there is no meter running while the driver waits outside a notary’s office.

Chain of custody on a same day run

On a same day run, the custody chain is short: the sender, one driver, the recipient. That is the whole point. Every additional handover is a place where an item can be delayed, misrouted or seen by someone who should not see it.

In practice:

  • At collection the driver identifies themselves, takes the item against a signed record (time, description, condition), and where appropriate the envelope or case is sealed in front of the sender.
  • In transit the item stays with the driver. It is not left in an unattended car, and the driver does not make other stops.
  • At delivery the driver hands over only to the named recipient, checks identity where agreed, and gets a signature. You receive confirmation that the delivery is complete.

The full framework, including what to specify for high value items, is in our guide to high value goods transport.

Same day courier Amsterdam: the short version

A same day courier in Amsterdam can mean a bike, a network van or a dedicated car. For ordinary parcels the first two are cheaper and perfectly good. When a deadline is fixed, the item cannot be replaced, or it must be handed to one specific person, a dedicated car with one vetted driver is the structure that removes the risk rather than insuring against it. Tell us what needs to move, by when and to whom, and we will confirm the car, the driver and the fixed price before anything leaves your hands. Book a same day run.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can a dedicated courier collect in Amsterdam?

It depends on where the nearest available driver and car are when you call, and on the time of day. Inside the ring road, a collection the same morning or afternoon is normal; at night or at weekends the lead time can be longer. We give you a realistic collection time when you book rather than a promise we cannot keep.

Is a dedicated courier more expensive than PostNL or a bike courier?

Yes, and for most parcels it should be. A network courier spreads the cost of each van over dozens of stops, while a dedicated car does one job. If your item is replaceable and a few hours either way do not matter, a regular courier is the better deal. The dedicated car earns its price when timing, custody or confidentiality matter.

Can you deliver to a person rather than an address?

Yes. Tell us the recipient's name and how they will identify themselves, and the driver hands over only to that person, against signature. If the recipient is in a meeting, at a hotel or about to board, the driver can wait or meet them at an agreed point, which a network courier with a fixed route cannot do.

Do you carry medical samples or medicines?

Not regulated diagnostic specimens, dangerous goods or temperature controlled pharmaceuticals. Those need certified packaging, trained handlers and often a validated cold chain, which a specialist medical courier provides. We are glad to point you to that route rather than improvise one.

Can I travel in the car with the item?

Often, yes. A lawyer accompanying signed originals or a buyer travelling with a purchase can ride in the back while the chauffeur drives. Custody stays with you, and the car handles the route, the parking and the waiting. Tell us when booking so we send a car with the right seating.

Does the courier work at night and at weekends?

SilverDrive operates 24/7, so a night or weekend run is possible. Night runs are often the fastest way to cross the Randstad or reach Belgium, because the motorways are clear. Book as early as you can, since the number of drivers on duty at three in the morning is smaller than at three in the afternoon.

Is my item insured during the run?

SilverDrive is not an insurer. For valuable items, we agree in writing before collection which policy responds, usually the sender's own cover, and what conditions it sets. For documents the real risk is usually delay or disclosure rather than replacement value, and that is what the single custody structure addresses.
