A car service in Amsterdam is a car and a professional chauffeur booked in advance, for a Schiphol transfer, a few hours around the city or a longer journey, at a price agreed before you travel. SilverDrive runs that service from its Amsterdam base with its own Mercedes-Benz and BMW fleet, 24 hours a day.

That definition matters more in Amsterdam than in most cities. In Dutch, “carservice” normally means a garage, so the local search results for the phrase are full of workshops and MOT stations. This page is about the other meaning: the car comes to you, with someone else driving it.

What a Car Service in Amsterdam Actually Is

A car service is pre-booked, private transport with a dedicated driver and a fixed price. You choose the vehicle, the pickup time and the route in advance. Nobody else shares the car, and the price does not move with traffic.

It sits between two familiar options. A taxi or a ride-hail app is on demand: you call for a car now, pay by the meter or the app’s dynamic rate, and the driver changes with every ride. A chauffeur booked for a full day or a multi-day programme is at the other end, closer to a personal driver. A car service covers the whole range in between, from one airport run to a day of meetings. If you want the full distinction, we explain it in what a car service is and compare the options on the ground in our chauffeur service in Amsterdam guide.

Honesty first: for one person crossing the centre with no luggage, a tram, a taxi or an app ride is cheaper and perfectly fine. A car service earns its place when timing, luggage, privacy or several stops are involved.

Which Car Service Bookings Cover Most Trips?

Five booking types cover nearly every request we receive in Amsterdam. Each has its own service page with the operational detail.

Airport transfers to and from Schiphol

The Schiphol run is the most common car service booking in the city. Schiphol sits about 20 to 30 minutes from central Amsterdam in normal traffic. Every airport transfer includes flight tracking and 60 minutes of waiting after touchdown, with a meeting point in the arrivals hall. For a formal arrival or departure, SilverDrive works with the Schiphol VIP Centre, and private aviation passengers are met at the general aviation terminal through Jet Aviation Amsterdam. The Schiphol pickup guide shows exactly where you meet the chauffeur.

Hourly bookings

An hourly chauffeur keeps the same car and driver with you for a block of time. The car waits outside each address, your bags stay in the boot and the next leg starts when you walk out. It suits shopping and museum days, property viewings and any afternoon with three or more stops. Hourly chauffeur hire explains how the time is counted.

Business travel

A business chauffeur is a car service built around a working schedule: hotel to Zuidas, client lunch on the canal ring, back to Schiphol for the evening flight. Assistants can book for several travellers at once and receive one invoice. For a more senior profile, the executive car service adds a higher vehicle class and a chauffeur briefed on discretion.

Events and occasions

Conferences at RAI Amsterdam, gala dinners, concerts and weddings all run on fixed timings that a taxi rank cannot guarantee. Event transportation handles arrivals in sequence and holds cars for the departure wave, and the wedding chauffeur service covers the day from preparation to the last guest.

City-to-city and long distance

A car service in Amsterdam does not stop at the A10 ring road. City-to-city transfers link Amsterdam with Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Antwerp, and long-distance drives reach Brussels, Düsseldorf, Paris and beyond. One chauffeur, one car, door to door.

The Fleet: Which Car for Which Journey?

The right vehicle depends on passengers, luggage and the impression the journey needs to make. Every car below belongs to SilverDrive and is driven by a SilverDrive chauffeur, not subcontracted on the day.

VehicleType and seatingTypical use
Mercedes-Benz E-ClassExecutive saloonAirport transfers, business travel, one or two travellers with luggage
Mercedes-Benz S-ClassLong-wheelbase saloonExecutive travel, longer drives, client hosting
Mercedes-Maybach S-ClassFlagship saloon, executive rear seatsVIP guests, weddings, the most senior travellers
Mercedes-Benz EQSElectric saloonZero-emission executive travel
BMW i7Electric saloonElectric executive travel with a large rear cabin
Mercedes-Benz V-ClassPeople carrier, up to 7 seatsFamilies, small teams, heavy luggage
Mercedes-Benz EQVElectric people carrier, up to 7 seatsGroups and teams on zero-emission journeys
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VIPMinibus, 16 seatsDelegations, roadshow teams, wedding guests
Setra S 515 HDHCoach, 56 seatsConferences, incentive groups, large events

Two practical notes. Seating is not the same as luggage capacity: four travellers with four large cases fit more comfortably in a V-Class than in a sedan. And the electric cars matter for companies that report travel emissions, because the journey can be logged as zero tailpipe emissions. The fleet overview has photos and interior details.

Where Does the Amsterdam Car Service Operate?

SilverDrive is based in Amsterdam and covers the whole of the Netherlands, with regular cross-border work into neighbouring countries. Most bookings start or end in one of four zones.

  • Amsterdam itself. The canal ring, Zuidas, RAI Amsterdam, the hotels around Museumplein, and the cruise terminal on the IJ. Inside the canal ring the chauffeur sets you down at the nearest workable point, because many of the narrow streets restrict through traffic.
  • Schiphol and the airport area. Terminal arrivals, the VIP Centre and the general aviation terminal for private flights.
  • The Randstad. Haarlem, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht are all within roughly an hour of central Amsterdam outside the rush hours. See our guides to Haarlem, The Hague and Utrecht.
  • Europe. Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland and the UK. Brussels and Düsseldorf are each about two hours by road, Paris roughly five. The city-to-city chauffeur guide covers when driving beats flying.

Time of day changes Amsterdam drive times more than distance does. The Amsterdam rush hour guide explains which windows to avoid on the A10 and the A4.

How Car Service Pricing Works in Amsterdam

The price of an Amsterdam car service is fixed when you book and does not change afterwards. There is no meter, no surge pricing in busy periods and no surcharge when a flight lands late within the included waiting time.

Three things set the quote:

  1. The vehicle class. An E-Class costs less than an S-Class, which costs less than a Maybach or a Sprinter.
  2. Distance or duration. Transfers are priced on the route; hourly bookings on the time held.
  3. Extras that change the job. Additional stops, long waits beyond the included time, very early or late hours, or a second car on the same schedule.

What should be included without discussion: the chauffeur, fuel or charging, tolls on the route, flight tracking and the agreed waiting time. Ask any provider to confirm this in writing. A quote that looks cheaper but adds parking and waiting afterwards is not cheaper. We publish no fixed price list in this article because the right figure depends on your route and date; the booking page returns an exact price for your journey.

How Booking Works

Booking takes a few minutes and the details are locked in before the day.

  1. Send the journey. Pickup address or flight number, destination, date, time, passengers and luggage, through the booking page or the contact form.
  2. Receive a fixed price. You see the vehicle and the total before you confirm.
  3. Confirm. You receive a written confirmation. Business clients can book on account and receive consolidated invoicing.
  4. Get the chauffeur details. Before pickup you receive the chauffeur details and the meeting point.
  5. Travel. For an airport pickup the chauffeur watches your flight and meets you in arrivals; for an address pickup the car is at the door before the agreed time.

Changes are easiest before the day. On the day, a call or message to the chauffeur or the office reroutes the car.

Why Choose SilverDrive as Your Car Service in Amsterdam

A car service is only as good as its weakest booking, so the questions worth asking are about control. Who owns the car? Who employs the driver? What happens when the plan changes?

SilverDrive answers them simply. The fleet is our own, so the vehicle you book is the vehicle that arrives. Chauffeurs are screened, English-speaking and know the city’s access rules, bridges and pickup points. Prices are fixed at booking. Flight tracking is standard on every airport job. The office runs 24 hours a day, and clients rate the service 4.7 out of 5. For the business side of the relationship, from accounts to invoicing, the corporate car service guide explains how companies set it up once and then stop thinking about it.

There are journeys we are not the best answer for, and we say so: a single short hop across the centre, or a solo trip to Brussels where the train is quicker to book and cheaper. For everything where the timing, the comfort or the people in the car matter, a booked car with a chauffeur is the calmer choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is "car service" in Amsterdam the same as a garage?

Not in this sense. In Dutch, "carservice" usually means a garage that maintains cars, which is why a search for car service in Amsterdam often returns workshops and APK stations. In English, and in this article, a car service means a pre-booked car with a professional driver: an airport transfer, an hourly booking or a longer journey at a fixed price.

How far in advance should I book a car service in Amsterdam?

For a single transfer, a day or two is usually enough, and short notice is often possible. Book further ahead for weeks with large trade fairs at RAI Amsterdam, for multi-car days, for the V-Class, Sprinter or coach, and for weekends in spring and summer. Earlier confirmation simply gives more choice of vehicle and chauffeur.

Can the car wait while I attend a meeting?

Yes, if you book it by the hour or as a full day. The chauffeur stays with the car near the address, keeps your belongings secure and moves to the next stop when you are ready. On a single transfer booking the car leaves after drop-off, so a schedule with several stops is normally cheaper and calmer as an hourly booking.

Does the car service include child seats?

Child seats can be arranged on request. Mention the age and weight of each child when you book, so the right seat is fitted before pickup. This is one practical reason families arriving at Schiphol choose a booked car over a taxi rank, where a suitable seat cannot be guaranteed.

Can I book a car service from Amsterdam to another country?

Yes. Cross-border journeys leave from Amsterdam regularly, to Brussels, Antwerp, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Paris and further. One chauffeur drives the whole route, stops are planned at booking and the price is fixed before departure. For one traveller with light luggage the train can be the cheaper choice, and we will tell you so.

What happens if my flight into Schiphol is late?

Nothing changes on your side. The chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts the pickup to the real landing time, and 60 minutes of waiting after touchdown are included in the fixed price. That covers passport control and baggage reclaim on a normal day, so there is no reason to rush.

Is a car service in Amsterdam suitable for groups?

Yes, within the limits of the vehicle. A V-Class or electric EQV seats up to seven, a Sprinter VIP seats 16 and the Setra coach seats 56. Larger programmes are usually split across several vehicles on one coordinated schedule, which keeps arrival times aligned at hotels and venues.
