Alkmaar is the main town of the north of North Holland, known far beyond the Netherlands for the cheese market on Waagplein. The dunes and beaches of Bergen, Egmond and Schoorl begin a few kilometres west, and the road north continues to Den Helder and the ferry to Texel.

A SilverDrive chauffeur turns that geography into one easy day, at a price agreed at booking. Combine Alkmaar with Amsterdam, Haarlem or Zandvoort on the same booking.

A chauffeur service in Alkmaar is a car from SilverDrive’s own fleet and a professional driver, booked at a fixed price before you travel. Alkmaar is about 40 minutes from Schiphol and from central Amsterdam, and the service here covers airport transfers, business days in the north of the province, match days at the AFAS Stadion and leisure days that combine the cheese market with the coast or the Texel ferry.

Alkmaar is the main town of the part of North Holland that lies north of Amsterdam, and it has a reputation larger than its size. Cheese has been traded on its Waagplein for centuries, the dunes and beaches of Bergen, Egmond and Schoorl begin a few kilometres west, and AZ fill the AFAS Stadion on match days. It is close enough to Schiphol for a short transfer and far enough from Amsterdam that a car with a driver is more convenient than a train and a taxi with luggage.

Schiphol to Alkmaar by chauffeur

Schiphol is about 40 minutes from Alkmaar by road in normal traffic, most of it on the A9. That makes Alkmaar one of the shorter regional transfers from the airport, and one where a pre-booked car competes well with the train once luggage or a group is involved.

Your chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and includes 60 minutes of waiting after touchdown, so a long passport queue costs nothing extra. Our Schiphol pickup guide shows where you meet, and the Schiphol airport guide covers the terminal. For early departures, the pickup is planned backwards from your check-in with a margin for the morning traffic on the A9.

Private flights are handled through the Schiphol VIP Centre or Jet Aviation, so the car meets you at the handling terminal rather than the public kerb.

The cheese market with a private driver

The Alkmaar cheese market takes place on Waagplein every Friday morning from late March to late September, from 10:00 to 13:00, with additional Tuesday evening markets in July and August. Cheese carriers, traders and market masters work the square much as they have for hundreds of years, and watching is free. The Dutch Cheese Museum is on the same square.

Market mornings fill the old town quickly. Waagplein is about a 15-minute walk from the station, and the streets around it are largely given over to pedestrians, so the practical arrangement is simple: your chauffeur sets you down a short walk from the square, waits nearby and collects you at an agreed point when you are ready to move on. Arriving before 10:00 gives you a better place at the front.

A morning at the market combines well with the rest of the region. The Zaanse Schans windmills lie roughly halfway between Amsterdam and Alkmaar, and the coast is a short drive west, so one hourly booking can cover windmills, cheese and a beach lunch without anyone checking a timetable.

AZ match days at the AFAS Stadion

AZ play at the AFAS Stadion on the edge of Alkmaar, about 40 minutes from central Amsterdam. On match days the roads around the ground fill well before kick-off, and parking is the part of the day nobody enjoys.

A chauffeur turns that into two fixed points: a drop-off at the zone that applies on the day and a pickup point agreed before you go in, with the car waiting there after the final whistle. Corporate hospitality guests travel in an S-Class or BMW i7; groups of friends fit in the seven-seat V-Class, and supporters’ clubs or company outings use the 16-seat Sprinter VIP. Our page on transfers to a football match explains the arrangement.

Bergen, the coast and the road to Texel

West of Alkmaar the land turns to dunes and beach within a few kilometres, which makes the town a natural base for a day by the sea.

  • Bergen, the artists’ village on the edge of the dunes, with galleries, restaurants and woodland walks.
  • Egmond aan Zee and Schoorl, for the beach, the dunes and the long walking and cycling routes through them.
  • Den Helder and Texel. Den Helder, at the northern tip of the province, is where the TESO ferry leaves for Texel, a crossing of about 20 minutes. Your chauffeur can take the car across, so your luggage stays in the vehicle and you have transport on the island. Our Dutch-language page on a day trip to Texel with a chauffeur sets out the timings.

For a day trip, the same chauffeur can collect you in Amsterdam, drive north along the coast and bring you back in the evening, at a price agreed before you leave.

Why SilverDrive in Alkmaar

SilverDrive was founded in Amsterdam by Joshua Faerber, and Alkmaar is close to our Amsterdam base. You get a car from our own fleet, a screened English-speaking chauffeur, a fixed price agreed at booking, free flight tracking on airport pickups and availability around the clock. For private aviation we work with the Schiphol VIP Centre and Jet Aviation.

The honest comparison matters too. Alkmaar has frequent trains to Amsterdam and beyond, and for one person travelling station to station the train is cheaper. A chauffeur is the better choice with an early flight, luggage, a group, a match or a day that continues to the coast. See all the places we cover on our cities page.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Schiphol to Alkmaar?

About 40 minutes in normal traffic, mostly on the A9, and a similar time from central Amsterdam. Peak hours on the A9 add to that. For a departure, your chauffeur plans backwards from check-in with a margin; for an arrival, the flight is tracked, so a delay moves the pickup and not the price.

When is the Alkmaar cheese market held?

The cheese market runs on Waagplein every Friday morning from late March to late September, from 10:00 to 13:00, with extra Tuesday evening markets in July and August. Watching is free. Check the official cheese market website for the current season before you plan the day.

Can the chauffeur drop us at the cheese market?

At the nearest practical point. On market mornings the old town around Waagplein is busy and largely given over to pedestrians, so your chauffeur sets you down a short walk away, waits nearby and collects you at an agreed spot when you are ready to move on.

Can you take us from Alkmaar to Texel?

Yes. Den Helder, where the TESO ferry leaves for Texel, is further north along the same road, and the crossing to the island takes about 20 minutes. The chauffeur can take the car across, so your luggage stays in the vehicle and you have transport on the island.

Is the train or a chauffeur better between Amsterdam and Alkmaar?

For one person travelling station to station, the train is cheaper and frequent. A chauffeur suits early flights, luggage, groups, addresses outside the centre, match days at the AFAS Stadion and days that continue to the coast, Bergen or Den Helder.
